Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp is the final base camp before the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, located along the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe routes. Perched on a rocky ridge in an exposed alpine desert zone, the camp offers dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding high-altitude landscape.

“Barafu” means ice in Swahili, reflecting the cold and challenging conditions. This is where climbers prepare for their summit attempt, usually beginning around midnight toward Uhuru Peak. Rest, hydration, and proper preparation here are critical for a successful ascent.
