The Kissing Rock (also called the Hugging Rock) is one of the most memorable and photographed spots on the Barranco Wall during a Mount Kilimanjaro climb. At this narrow section, climbers must press their body against a large protruding rock while gripping it with both hands — resembling a kiss or a hug.
Many first-time climbers worry about this point, but with proper guidance it is safe and often becomes a fun, iconic moment on the route. At Kilisherpas Travel, we guide hundreds of climbers past the Kissing Rock every year on the Lemosho, Machame, and Umbwe routes.
This 2026/2027 guide explains what the Kissing Rock is, how to pass it safely, and why it has become a cherished tradition on Kilimanjaro.
Where Is the Kissing Rock Located?
The Kissing Rock sits on the Barranco Wall, a steep cliff face that rises about 257 meters (843 feet) above Barranco Valley at an altitude of roughly 4,000 meters (13,100 feet).
Climbers encounter it while ascending from Barranco Camp toward Karanga Camp on the following popular routes:
Lemosho Route
Machame Route
Umbwe Route
The Barranco Wall was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago during volcanic activity on Kibo, the central cone of Kilimanjaro.
Why Is It Called the Kissing Rock?
At one narrow point on the trail, the path becomes so tight that climbers must lean forward and press their chest and face against a large rock outcrop to shuffle past it. From the side, it looks exactly like someone giving the rock a kiss — hence the name.
Some climbers playfully kiss the rock for luck or as a sign of gratitude to the mountain. Others simply hug it for balance. It’s entirely optional and adds a light-hearted moment to an otherwise challenging day.
Is the Kissing Rock Dangerous?
No — the Kissing Rock is not dangerous when climbed with an experienced guide.
The section is short and well-marked.
The trail is stable rock with good handholds.
No technical climbing skills or equipment (ropes, harnesses) are required.
No recorded fatalities have occurred at the Kissing Rock.
The main challenges on the Barranco Wall are:
Exposure (feeling of height)
Narrow path requiring focus and careful foot placement
Potential for fatigue after previous trekking days
Our guides are highly experienced at helping climbers of all ages and fitness levels navigate this section safely and confidently.
How to Safely Pass the Kissing Rock
Follow your guide’s instructions — they will show you exactly where to place your hands and feet.
Move slowly and deliberately — no rushing.
Use both hands to grip the rock for balance.
Keep your body close to the rock — lean into it slightly.
Trekking poles are usually stowed on your backpack for this section, as they can get in the way.
Stay calm — the section is brief and the guides are there to assist if needed.
If you have a fear of heights, inform your guide in advance. They can provide extra verbal encouragement and physical spotting where necessary.
Even 86-year-old Angela Vorobeva, who set a world record as the oldest person to summit Kilimanjaro with our team, passed the Kissing Rock safely with guide assistance.
Tips for a Smooth Barranco Wall Day
Start early from Barranco Camp to avoid bottlenecks.
Stay hydrated and eat a good breakfast.
Wear comfortable, grippy shoes with good traction.
Move at your own steady pace — “pole pole” (slowly slowly) is the Tanzanian way.
