Changuu Island, better known as Prison Island or Tortoise Island, is one of the most popular day trips from Stone Town in Zanzibar. Just a short 20-minute boat ride away, this small island offers a wonderful mix of history, nature, and wildlife that both adults and children love.
Although its official name is Changuu, most visitors call it Prison Island because of the old coral-stone prison buildings, or Tortoise Island because of its famous giant tortoises. Some also know it as Quarantine Island or Kibandiko, but no matter what name you use, it’s the same beautiful little island less than one kilometre long.
Giant Tortoises – The Star Attraction
The highlight of any visit to Prison Island is meeting the majestic Aldabra giant tortoises. These gentle giants can grow up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length and weigh over 200 kg. Some of the tortoises on the island are believed to be more than 100 years old!
When you arrive, you’ll enter the Tortoise Sanctuary, where the slow-moving giants roam freely. You can feed them cabbage leaves (provided at the entrance), watch them stretch their long necks, and take plenty of photos. The young tortoises are kept in a separate protected area, while peacocks wander gracefully around the park.
Important tip: Please do not sit on or try to ride the tortoises — it can harm them. You can gently touch their shells instead.
The Prison & Quarantine History
Behind the tortoise park lie the ruins of the old prison buildings. Interestingly, this prison was never actually used to hold dangerous criminals. Built in 1894 by the British, the coral-stone structures were quickly turned into a quarantine station to stop the spread of diseases like cholera and plague coming from ships.
The rooms that were meant to be prison cells became hospital wards. For many years, the island served as a quarantine point for sailors and passengers arriving in Zanzibar. Today, you can walk through the old buildings, see the iron rings once used to restrain people, and even relax at the small bar located inside one of the former prison rooms.
Beautiful Beaches and Views
Prison Island also has a lovely small beach with white sand and clear turquoise water — perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The old pier offers great photo opportunities, especially with the historic buildings in the background. On the other side of the island, you can explore rocky shores and coral areas when the tide is low.
A small hotel and Mathews’ Restaurant (located in the historic European bungalow) operate on the island, though availability can vary.
